Is it safe to practise magick while I am pregnant?

Asked by Expecting and wondering

For most forms of gentle magickal practice, yes. Meditation, candle work, journaling with intention, grounding exercises, oracle and tarot reading, working with crystals, setting intentions at the new and full moon: these are all appropriate and many practitioners find pregnancy a period of heightened intuition and powerful connection to cyclical magic.

That said, pregnancy is a significant physical and energetic state, and a few specific considerations are worth knowing.

What to be thoughtful about

Herbs. This is the area requiring the most care. Several herbs commonly used in smoke cleansing, herbal baths, teas, and spell work are contraindicated in pregnancy because they can stimulate uterine contractions or have other physiological effects. Mugwort, pennyroyal, tansy, wormwood, blue cohosh, and black cohosh fall into this category and should be avoided entirely during pregnancy, both internally and in concentrated topical or inhalation use. Speak with your midwife or obstetrician about any herbal preparation you are considering. This is a situation where magickal tradition and medical safety need to inform each other directly.

Strong smoke. Incense and herb bundles produce particulate matter, and sustained inhalation of smoke is not ideal during pregnancy. Work with good ventilation, keep sessions brief, or switch to diffused essential oils that are pregnancy-safe. Your healthcare provider can advise on which essential oils to avoid, as some are also contraindicated.

Intense visualisation and trance work. Many practitioners find that their sensitivity is heightened during pregnancy, which means some forms of deep trance, shadow work, or emotionally intense ritual can feel more overwhelming than usual. This is not dangerous, but it is worth being gentle with yourself and not pushing into territory that feels destabilising when your nervous system has a lot to manage.

What pregnancy opens up

Pregnancy is a liminal state with its own profound magickal dimensions. Many traditions around the world recognise pregnant people as particularly close to the threshold between worlds. Work with themes of creation, welcome, protection, and nurturing is particularly potent now. Writing letters to your child, making protective charms for the nursery, sitting in meditation with the intention of meeting the soul coming in: these are practices that practitioners across traditions have found meaningful and resonant.

Your body knows how to do what it is doing. Your practice can hold and accompany that, rather than trying to direct it.

As with all health-related matters, please keep your midwife or obstetrician informed about any wellness practices you are undertaking. Magickal practice works alongside good prenatal care, not instead of it.
