Ask Grimoire
Is it true you should not buy your own first tarot deck?
Asked by Waiting for a gift
You can absolutely buy your own tarot deck. Please do not wait.
The tradition that says your first deck must be gifted to you is a widely circulated folk belief, not a magickal law or a historical requirement. It is one of those ideas that spreads through witchcraft communities as received wisdom and can leave a new practitioner waiting indefinitely for someone else to start their journey for them. That is exactly backwards from how most genuine learning works.
Where the idea came from
The origin of the “must be a gift” rule is not clear. It appears in some mid-twentieth century esoteric texts and spread from there. Various explanations have been attached to it over the years: that a self-purchased deck carries the wrong energy, that the gift transfers something from the giver”s practice to yours, that the Universe will provide the right deck at the right time. None of these have a clear or agreed-upon traditional basis. They are rationalizations built around a piece of folklore.
There is a kernel of something real in the underlying idea: the deck you work with should feel right to you, and having someone who knows you well choose a deck for you can result in a surprisingly good match. That is a meaningful experience when it happens. It is not, however, a requirement for a functional practice.
What actually matters
The deck you choose should be one whose imagery speaks to you. Tarot is an image-based practice; your intuition works through pictures, symbols, and the feelings they generate. If you sit down with a deck and the images feel alive and interesting to you, that is a good deck for you. If the imagery leaves you cold or confused, even a beautifully made deck will be frustrating to work with.
This is an argument for choosing your own first deck rather than waiting for a gift. You are the one who will be sitting with these images and building a relationship with them. Your response to the art matters enormously, and nobody else can have that response for you.
Secondhand decks
Secondhand tarot decks are completely fine to work with and are often available at much lower prices than new. Cleanse the deck when you get it, shuffle it thoroughly with your own hands and intentions, and spend a few sessions getting acquainted with it before you use it for serious readings. It will adapt to your energy quickly, as all tools do when worked with consistently and with attention.
Buy the deck that calls to you. Begin.
