Lesson 1 of 10

What We Mean by Energy

If you have ever walked into a room and immediately felt something was off, or spent an afternoon with a friend and come home feeling lighter than when you left, you have already encountered what practitioners call energy. This course puts words and practices around something you have been sensing your whole life.

The word “energy” gets used in a lot of ways, so it helps to be clear about what we mean here. We are not talking about electricity or the physics definition you might remember from school. We are talking about the felt sense of aliveness and influence that seems to flow through living beings and the spaces they inhabit. Different traditions have their own names for it: prana in yogic philosophy, qi in Chinese medicine, mana in some Polynesian traditions. The specific vocabulary varies, but the underlying observation is remarkably consistent across cultures and centuries.

Why it matters for a beginner

You do not need to decide, right now, exactly what energy is at a scientific or metaphysical level. What matters to begin with is that you start paying attention to it. This course is built around noticing first and theorising later, because your own lived experience is the best foundation for any kind of psychic or energetic work.

Energy practices are used for a wide range of purposes: feeling more settled in your own body, recovering after draining situations, creating a sense of safety in your home, and building a clearer sense of where you end and the rest of the world begins. All of those things are on the menu in the lessons ahead.

What this is and is not

Working with energy is a complementary practice, which means it sits alongside ordinary life, not instead of it. If you are dealing with anxiety, exhaustion, or anything that is significantly affecting your wellbeing, please lean on the professionals and support systems available to you. Energy work can be a meaningful part of a healthy life, and it works best when it is one tool among many, not a replacement for care you need.

There are no prerequisites for this course. You do not need to be spiritual, psychic, or experienced in anything. You just need to be willing to pay attention.

Try this. Think of one situation this week where you walked away from a person or place feeling noticeably different than before you arrived. Just name it to yourself. That reaction is your starting point.
