Your First Spells

Welcome. You are about to cast your first spells, and that is worth a moment of appreciation before you dive in. Not because it is dramatic, but because you made a choice to try something. That choice matters.

This course is not theoretical. Each lesson gives you one complete spell to cast, using simple materials you probably already own or can pick up at any corner shop. The spells are safe, ethical, and built for people who have never done anything like this before. You do not need a tradition, a teacher, or a shelf full of special supplies.

What you actually need

Almost everything in this course can be done with a white candle, a small piece of paper, a pen, a glass jar with a lid, and a few items from your kitchen. Where specific herbs, oils, or crystals appear, a common alternative is always listed. Spellwork rewards resourcefulness far more than it rewards expensive tools.

The one thing you cannot substitute is your own attention. A spell cast while you are distracted and halfway scrolling your phone will land flat. A spell cast with five minutes of genuine focus, using nothing fancier than a birthday candle and a sticky note, can feel genuinely powerful. Your presence is the ingredient that matters most.

A quick word on ethics

Every spell in this course is written to help you, not to influence or control anyone else. You will not find love spells that target a specific person, spells designed to cause harm, or anything that overrides another person’s free will. That boundary is not a limitation. It is simply the right way to work.

If you ever feel uncertain whether a spell crosses a line, ask yourself: is this about creating conditions in my own life, or is this about forcing an outcome in someone else’s? The first kind is yours to cast. The second kind is worth reconsidering.

How to use this course

Read each lesson once, gather what you need, and then cast the spell. You do not need to do all ten in one sitting. One a week, or even one a month, is plenty. Let each spell settle before you move to the next.

Try this. Before the next lesson, find a quiet spot in your home where you feel reasonably comfortable and unhurried. That spot will become your working space for this course. You do not need to decorate it or make it special. You just need to know where it is.

Before you build anything new, it helps to clear the ground. A space cleansing is usually the first thing a practitioner does before any other spell work, and it is one of the most satisfying spells to cast because the result is something you can actually feel. Rooms do hold energy. A good cleansing leaves a space lighter, and you will probably notice the difference within an hour.

What you need

• A bundle of dried herbs for burning (rosemary, lavender, or mugwort all work; dried garden sage is fine), or a stick of incense in a cleansing scent like frankincense or cedar
• A fireproof bowl or dish to catch ash
• A bell, singing bowl, or two spoons you can click together
• An open window or door

If you cannot burn anything indoors, skip the smoke entirely and use the bell or sound alone. Sound cleansing is equally effective.

The spell

Open at least one window or door before you begin, so the stale energy has somewhere to go.

Light your herb bundle or incense and let it catch until it smokes steadily. Hold it over your fireproof dish at all times.

Starting at the front door of your home (or at the entrance to whichever room you are cleansing), move clockwise around the perimeter of the space. Let the smoke drift into corners, along windowsills, and over doorframes. As you walk, say aloud or in your mind: “What does not serve me here is free to leave. This space is clean and clear and mine.”

When you have gone all the way around, return to the center of the room. Ring your bell three times. Each ring is a signal: first to release what was here, second to welcome in fresh energy, third to seal the cleansed space.

Let your herb bundle or incense burn out safely in the fireproof dish, or press it out firmly against the dish’s surface to extinguish it completely. Never leave burning material unattended.

Open a window for a few minutes afterward to air out the smoke and complete the clearing.

Protection spells are among the oldest in recorded magical history, and for good reason. Sometimes you need a boundary, whether that is protection from draining people, from difficult situations at work, or simply from the background noise of a world that can feel overwhelming. This spell builds a clean, clear energetic boundary, and it starts with one of the most ancient protective materials there is: salt.

What you need

• A small handful of salt (table salt is fine; sea salt or black salt also work)
• A black or white candle, in a stable holder
• A quiet moment of about ten minutes

The spell

Set your candle in its holder and light it. Sit comfortably nearby and take three slow breaths to arrive fully in the moment.

Fire safety reminder. Place your candle on a heat-safe surface, away from curtains or anything flammable, and never leave it burning without someone in the room.

Pick up the salt in both hands and hold it for a moment. Think about what you are asking protection from. Be specific. Vague protection requests produce vague results. “Protection from my colleague’s negativity at work” is better than “protect me from everything.”

Say clearly: “This salt marks a boundary. What drains me stays outside it. What strengthens me is welcome here.”

Now carry the salt to the four corners of the room or your home, and drop a small pinch in each corner. If you are protecting just yourself rather than a space, trace a circle of salt around where you are sitting instead.

Return to your candle. Sit with the flame for a moment and picture yourself surrounded by a clear, steady light, the color of your choosing, that acts as a filter. Good things pass through it easily. What is harmful or draining cannot. Hold that image for thirty seconds.

Let the candle burn for a few more minutes, then snuff it out safely (do not blow it out; use your fingers or a candle snuffer to preserve the spell’s energy, according to folk tradition).

You can leave the salt in the corners for as long as you like, sweeping it up and replacing it monthly if you use this as a regular practice.

The candle wish spell is probably the form of spellwork most people have already done without calling it that. Birthday candles, church votive candles, the single taper lit on a difficult evening: humans have been using fire to carry wishes for as long as fire existed. This version is just a little more deliberate.

What you need

• One candle in a color that feels right for your wish (yellow for confidence or creativity, green for money or growth, pink for love or friendship, white for anything at all)
• A candle holder or a small plate
• A pin, toothpick, or the tip of a ballpoint pen
• About fifteen minutes of uninterrupted time

The spell

Before you light the candle, use your pin or toothpick to carve a word or short symbol into the wax. This can be a single word that names your wish (“abundance,” “courage,” “love”), your initials, or a simple shape that represents what you want. You are writing your intention directly into the spell’s focal point.

Set the candle in its holder and take a moment to hold it in both hands. Think about your wish as clearly and specifically as you can. Feel what it would be like to have it. Not what it would look like on paper, but how it would feel in your body to already have this thing you want.

Light the candle.

Fire safety reminder. Always use a proper holder or a plate to catch drips, keep the candle away from anything flammable, and stay in the room while it burns. If you cannot supervise it, snuff it out and relight it when you can watch it.

As the flame settles, say your wish aloud, once, in a complete sentence. Speak it in the present tense, as though it is already on its way: “I am finding my way to financial ease” rather than “I want more money.”

Sit with the candle for as long as feels right, five minutes or twenty, watching the flame. When you feel ready, say “So it is” and let the candle continue burning until it goes out on its own (in a safe situation where you can supervise it), or snuff it out and relight it the next day until it finishes.

Once the candle is gone, the spell is cast and released. Do not keep working it or second-guessing it. Trust that you sent it clearly.

Some spells are for pulling things toward you. This one is for returning to yourself. Anxiety, overwhelm, and the feeling of being scattered are real experiences, and this spell is designed to give you a concrete ritual to reach for when you need to settle.

• A blue or white cloth, or simply a quiet place to sit
• A few dried lavender flowers, a drop of lavender essential oil, or a lavender tea bag (all optional, but lovely)
• Five minutes

The spell

Fill a glass with cold water and hold it in both hands. If you have lavender, drop a little into the water or rest the sachet beside the glass.

Sit down somewhere you feel reasonably safe. Set the glass in front of you and look at the water for a moment. Water is one of the oldest calming symbols in magical practice: it flows around obstacles, it finds its own level, it is patient.

Take three long, slow breaths. On each exhale, imagine that whatever is making you tense is leaving your body with the breath. You do not have to force it. Just breathe out and let the idea be true.

Pick up the glass. Say quietly, or in your mind: “I am returning to myself. I am steadier than I feel right now. I can move through this.”

Drink the water slowly, in several sips. With each sip, imagine calm entering your body the same way water does, spreading outward from your center, reaching into your hands, your shoulders, your jaw.

When the glass is empty, sit quietly for another minute. You do not have to think about anything. You do not have to fix whatever is hard. You just have to be here, in your body, with the calm you just brought in.

You can repeat this spell as many times as you need. It costs nothing and takes five minutes.

Try this. The next time you feel your anxiety rising before it gets very bad, stop and cast this spell right then. Catching the feeling early makes the spell work better and teaches you to respond to yourself sooner.

Luck is a slippery thing to define in magical terms, but most practitioners think of it as a state of openness: being positioned to notice and receive good things that are already in motion. A luck spell does not conjure money out of nothing or guarantee a win. It shifts you into a more receptive posture, and that shift is genuinely useful.

This spell is best cast on a Thursday (associated with abundance and expansion in many traditions) or on a waxing moon, when the moon is growing from new toward full. But do not wait for perfect timing if you need it now. A spell cast today beats a perfect spell cast never.

What you need

• One green candle (a small birthday candle works fine)
• A coin, any coin that feels meaningful to you
• A pinch of cinnamon from your kitchen
• A small dish or saucer

The spell

Set your candle in or on the dish. Place the coin directly in front of it. Sprinkle the cinnamon around the coin in a small circle.

Fire safety reminder. Keep the candle stable in its holder or pressed into a small mound of aluminum foil on the dish, away from anything flammable, and stay nearby while it burns.

Hold the coin in your right hand while you light the candle with your left. (If that feels awkward, reverse it. There are no wrong hands here.)

Look at the flame for a moment, then say: “Good things are finding their way to me. I am open to what is coming, and I will recognize it when it arrives.”

Set the coin down in front of the candle and let the cinnamon smoke if any of it catches the warmth. Sit with the candle for a few minutes. Think about what “lucky” would actually look like in your life right now. A door opening. A chance encounter. A small windfall. Let the image be pleasant and specific.

When the candle has burned down or you choose to snuff it, keep the coin in your pocket, purse, or on your desk for the next week. It is your physical reminder that you are in a receptive state.

After the week is up, spend the coin intentionally (put it in a tip jar, toss it in a fountain, give it to someone) as an act of gratitude and release.

Try this. Cast this spell before a week when you have something you are hoping will go well, a meeting, an application, an audition, and pay attention to small good things that happen around it.

Most spells you cast and release. A jar spell is different. You build it, seal it, and let it work over time. It is a good format for goals that need sustained energy behind them: a creative project, a job search, a relationship you are trying to grow, a habit you are building. The jar holds your intention so you do not have to keep holding it yourself.

This version is a sweetening jar, one of the oldest and most widely used folk magic formats. The honey or sugar draws good outcomes to your goal, and the herbs and objects inside build on that work.

What you need

• A small glass jar with a lid (a jam jar or spice jar is perfect)
• Honey or sugar
• A small piece of paper and a pen
• One or two herbs from your kitchen that match your goal: rosemary for memory and focus, basil for money and growth, chamomile for calm progress, bay leaf for wishes and achievement
• One small item that represents your goal (optional but meaningful: a coin for a money goal, a key for an opportunity, a dried flower for a relationship)

The spell

Write your goal on the piece of paper in a complete, positive sentence. Use present tense: “I am building a thriving freelance practice” rather than “I want clients.” Fold the paper toward you (fold it so the paper comes toward your body, not away), which is the traditional motion for drawing things in.

Place the folded paper in the jar. Add your herbs on top of it, a pinch of each. Add your small symbolic object if you have one.

Spoon in the honey or pour in the sugar until the herbs and paper are covered. As you pour, say: “This goal is sweet and right. It is drawing to me now. I feed it and I trust it.”

Put the lid on tightly. Hold the jar in both hands for a moment and think about your goal with genuine feeling, not strain or worry, but the warm feeling of something you believe in.

Set the jar somewhere you will see it regularly, on your desk, a windowsill, or your altar if you have one. When you notice it, take a second to feel that warm confidence again. That is not superstition; it is keeping your own attention aligned with what you are working toward.

Leave the jar in place until your goal is reached, then empty it into the earth as a thank-you and recycle the jar.

Try this. Make your jar today for one goal you have been putting off or feeling uncertain about. The act of building the jar is often enough to make the goal feel real and achievable.

Sleep is one of the most important things your body does, and it is also one of the first things to suffer when life gets difficult. This spell creates a small bedtime ritual to signal to your nervous system that it is safe to rest. It works because rituals themselves are calming: your body learns that these steps mean sleep is coming, and it begins to respond accordingly.

Before you begin: magick works alongside real care, not instead of it. If you are dealing with a persistent sleep condition, please also speak with a doctor or sleep specialist. This spell is a gentle support, not a medical intervention.

What you need

• A small cloth pouch or a square of fabric tied with a ribbon (any fabric, any color)
• Dried lavender (or a lavender tea bag torn open, or a drop of lavender oil on a cotton ball)
• A small amethyst or moonstone, if you have one (completely optional)
• A piece of paper and a pen
• A white or silver candle, if you would like one

The spell

Do this as part of your getting-ready-for-bed routine, not in the middle of the night when you are already frustrated about not sleeping.

On the piece of paper, write down anything that is sitting in your mind that you do not want to carry into sleep. Worries, to-do items, things left unsaid. Write them down in a list. Then draw a horizontal line under the list and write beneath it: “These are noted. They will wait. I am resting now.” Fold the paper and set it on your bedside table.

Place the lavender (and crystal, if using) in your small pouch and tie it closed. Hold it in your hands and say: “This is for rest. What I carry today is set down at this door.”

If you have a candle, light it while you do the next part: sit on the edge of your bed, hold the pouch, and take ten slow breaths. Count each one. If your mind wanders, just come back to counting. At breath ten, blow out the candle gently.

Fire safety reminder. If using a candle, make absolutely sure it is fully extinguished before you lie down. Never sleep with a candle burning.

Tuck the pouch under your pillow or beside it. Get into bed.

The pouch is yours to keep. Refresh the lavender inside it once a month or whenever the scent fades.

Try this. Use this ritual for three nights in a row and notice whether the third night feels different from the first.

Some of the most powerful spells are not about drawing things toward you but about setting things down. Resentment, grief, an old version of yourself, a relationship that has ended, a story you have been telling about why you cannot do something: all of these can be released, and burning is one of the oldest symbolic acts of release in magical practice. Fire transforms. What goes into it does not come back.

This spell is simple and, for many people, surprisingly emotional. Give yourself permission to feel whatever comes up during it.

What you need

• A piece of paper
• A pen
• A fireproof bowl or dish (a metal mixing bowl, a cast-iron pan, or a ceramic dish all work)
• Matches or a lighter
• Water nearby, just in case

The spell

Sit somewhere private and quiet. You want to be able to speak honestly without worrying about being heard.

Write on your piece of paper exactly what you want to release. Be specific and be honest. If it is a person, write their name and what happened. If it is a belief about yourself, write it out in full: “I am releasing the belief that I am not enough,” or “I am letting go of the anger I have carried since the day I lost that job.” Do not tidy it up. Write the true version.

When you have written what you need to write, read it back once. Let it be real for a moment.

Then say: “I have carried this long enough. I release it now. It is done, and I am free of it.”

Hold the paper over your fireproof bowl and light one corner of it. Watch it burn. If it feels right, say the person’s name or the thing’s name aloud as it burns. Let the paper go completely into the bowl.

Fire safety reminder. Do this over a metal or ceramic bowl, not paper or fabric. Keep your water close by. Make sure the ash is fully cold before you dispose of it, and never do this near curtains, shelving, or anything flammable.

Once the ash is cool, take it outside and either bury it in the earth or scatter it somewhere away from your home. You are returning it to the world without keeping it in your space.

Take a few slow breaths. Wash your hands. The spell is complete.

Try this. Choose one thing you have been holding for longer than it deserves, and write this spell today. You do not have to be over the thing before you release it. You just have to be willing to start.

You have cast eight spells. That is not nothing. A lot of people read about magic for years without actually doing it, and you did it. Whatever happened when you cast those spells, whether the results were dramatic, subtle, or still unfolding, you have learned something that no amount of reading can give you: the feel of doing the work.

What you now know

You know how to clear a space and build a protective boundary around it. You know how to hold an intention in a candle flame and how to let it go when the spell is done. You have made a jar that is holding a goal for you right now. You have burned something you were ready to release. You know that a spell can be made from water, salt, and three slow breaths, and that the materials are almost never the point.

The point, in every spell you cast, was your own focused attention. Everything else was just a way to anchor it.

A few things worth knowing as you continue

Keep a simple record. You do not need a formal grimoire or a leather-bound journal (although those are lovely if you want them). A notes app on your phone works. Write down what you cast, when, what you used, and what happened afterward. Over time, patterns emerge, and those patterns tell you a great deal about how your own magical mind works.

Pay attention to timing. Waxing moons (growing toward full) support spells for drawing things in. Waning moons (moving toward new) support release and banishing work. The full moon amplifies almost anything. The new moon is the best time to plant new intentions. You do not have to follow this strictly, but it adds a layer of resonance when you do.

Expand at your own pace. Candle magic and sympathetic magic (the jar spell, the paper burning) are two of the broadest and most ancient forms of spellwork. From here you might explore herb lore, moon work, divination, working with specific deities or spirits, kitchen witchcraft, or any number of other paths. All of them are available to you. None of them require you to be anything other than curious.

Trust your instincts. If something in a spell feels wrong for you, change it. Magick is not a fixed set of rules handed down from a single authority. It is a living practice, and your version of it will be shaped by your hands over time.
