Van Van Oil

Van Van Oil is one of the most fundamental condition oils in the Hoodoo tradition, a bright, lemongrass-forward formula used for clearing crossed conditions and bad luck, refreshing stagnant energy, and opening the road for good fortune to enter. Its versatility, pleasant, uplifting scent, and relatively gentle character have made it one of the most widely known and widely sold spiritual oils in North American practice.

The formula is built around lemongrass and related aromatic grasses, giving it a fresh, green-citrus scent that distinguishes it immediately from heavier, resinous condition oils. The underlying energetic quality is one of clearing, brightening, and movement: Van Van is not primarily a protection oil or a love oil but a general-purpose opener that prepares the ground for whatever working comes next.

History and origins

Van Van Oil is associated most strongly with New Orleans Hoodoo and is believed to have originated there. The name is sometimes linked to the French phrase “vient vient” meaning “come come,” though etymological certainty on this point is not established. What is clear is that Van Van has been part of the New Orleans Hoodoo commercial landscape since at least the early twentieth century, and mail-order spiritual goods catalogs from companies like King Novelty and Cracker Jack featured it among their signature products.

The formula’s core ingredients, the aromatic grasses in the Cymbopogon genus including lemongrass, vetivert, citronella, and palmarosa, were available through the herbal and essential oil trade that expanded through the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, making it plausible that the formula developed alongside the growth of the commercial spiritual goods industry. Individual practitioners and suppliers have varied the formula according to family tradition and availability of ingredients.

Magickal uses

Van Van’s primary action is clearing and opening. In Hoodoo understanding, bad luck is often the result of a crossed condition: a blockage, jinx, or accumulated negative influence that prevents good things from reaching the practitioner. Van Van cuts through these crossings and restores a clear channel for blessings and opportunity.

Because it is a generalist clearing oil, Van Van is often used at the beginning of a working sequence before more specific oils are applied. You might cleanse the working space and your own hands with Van Van, then proceed to a love or money working with a more targeted formula. In this sense it functions as the first step in a multi-stage working.

Van Van is also widely used to feed and refresh mojo bags. Condition bags need to be fed regularly, typically with the oil they were originally dressed with or with a compatible general-purpose oil; Van Van is considered appropriate for most bag types and is particularly useful when a bag feels energetically depleted or stagnant.

For floor washing, a few drops of Van Van Oil can be added to a bucket of wash water used to scrub thresholds, doorsteps, and floors. This is one of the classic Hoodoo spatial cleansing methods, clearing the environment of accumulated negativity and preparing the home to receive good.

How to work with it

For a simple clearing: apply Van Van Oil to your palms before going into a situation that has felt blocked or unlucky. Rub your hands together, breathe in the scent, and state your intention: “This clears the way. Good fortune follows.” This straightforward use can be repeated daily when you feel stuck.

For a road-opening candle: dress a yellow or orange candle with Van Van Oil, applying from both ends inward toward the center for drawing. Place on your altar with a petition paper beneath stating what you want the road opened for. Burn the candle in sections over several days, focusing your intention each time you light it.

For floor washing: add 7 to 14 drops of Van Van Oil to a bucket of water along with a pinch of salt. Wash floors and thresholds moving from the back of the house toward the front door, then outward across the threshold and step. This moves stagnant or negative energy out of the space.

Van Van Oil is safe for skin use at standard dilution. Most commercial preparations are already pre-diluted in a carrier oil, but verify the concentration before applying undiluted essential oil directly to skin.
